There is uncertainty regarding the omicron variant of covid-19 and research is underway. Children per say are not the targets but as the virus is mutating rapidly, children are not spared either.
The impact of the virus in children is the same as that of flu. The signs parents need to look out for:
- Cold & Cough
- High grade fever
- Anosmia and ageusia
Most symptoms can be managed at home and only severe cases require hospitalization. The severity of the disease in children depends on the child’s immunity, the community’s covid vaccination status, environmental hygiene and sanitation etiquette.
Kids can combat the virus better than adults as their innate immunity is better. But when a huge chunk of the population is affected, we will witness severe cases in children as well.
Most transmissions happen at home, so the most effective way to protect children is to ensure every family member is vaccinated, avoiding overcrowding of places, social distancing, hand hygiene and wearing a mask are all critical to prevent spread of covid 19 infection.
