Autism also known as autism spectrum disorder typically appears in the first 3 years of life. It is a developmental and neurological disorder where the child has problems with social interaction and communication skills.
Nutritionists have used Gluten free and casein free diet on children with autism. Gluten (wheat, barley and rye) and casein (milk and dairy products) hinder the absorption of folate which is required for neurological development of the child. Genetically modified wheat leads to leaky gut syndrome in children and these kids develop food allergies.
Following food items should be inculcated in the diet to manage nutritional deficiencies and prevent complications.
1. Vitamin B6 and Magnesium
These nutrients are essential to improve speech and language skills in children. Fish, nuts, soybean, oats, spinach, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, avocado, potato, brown rice should be given.
2. Vitamin C and Zinc
Pregnant mothers should include these nutrients in their diet to prevent autism in the foetus. Eggs,
legumes, pumpkins, orange, grapes, lemon, papaya, broccoli should be added.
3. Omega 3 fatty acid and Vitamin D
According to trials there is strong evidence that vitamin D particularly DHA can significantly improve symptoms of autism. Walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, soyabean, cod liver oil, salmon should be given.
4. Probiotic rich foods
Gastrointestinal problems are commonly observed in autistic children. Adding probiotics to diet can improve the gut lining and smooth passage of stools. Curd, fermented food like idli and dhokla should be given.
